Nearly as soon as coaches began to travel West, they became targets of armed robbery. Gold flowing from the resource-rich West back to the cash-laden East traveled on coaches. Payrolls and taxes and all the business of banking traveled by coach. And settlers moving west by coach carried much of their worldly wealth along with them. Robbing coaches was a lucrative business and soon spawned another profession: riding shotgun.
This moniker referred to the guard who sat next to the driver of the coach, carrying heavy-duty weaponry such as the Coach Gun to protect the strongbox and the passengers. This authentic replica is finished in simulated-worn hardwood and antiqued metal to appear just as they would have in the hands of a guard riding shotgun. This is the familiar break-open shotgun that bent to expose the loading end of the double barrels for easy loading. Dual hammers and dual triggers made this gun doubly deadly, as it had to be for the hard business of riding shotgun.
Shotguns were not made for precision shooting, but they did massive amounts of damage over a considerable distance with a wide spread of fatal force, making accuracy a convenience, not a necessity.
The overall length of this gun is an impressive 35 inches.
